Impact of the Support Rendered to a 14-Year-Old Girl Suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Impact of the Support Rendered to a 14-Year-Old Girl Suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Parents of children benefiting from our Educate to Employ program approached Vama Charitable Trust to support their children with disabilities. To be responsive to our trust’s services, elders reciprocate the benefits received by them by caring for and supporting people with disabilities. Vama Charitable Trust’s objective is to promote inclusiveness in all aspects.

Our trust supports differently-abled individuals by providing medical and livelihood support and empowering them through training in Culinary Arts, Computer, and Commerce professions.

Sripriya’s Journey with Vama Charitable Trust

Ms. Sripriya, a 14-year-old diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, is one of the significant beneficiaries of Vama Trust for her rehabilitation. She cannot walk or sit and requires daily physiotherapy. Our trust organized a physiotherapist to visit her home daily. For the last two years, with your support, we have been able to provide this therapy. Our team regularly visits and interacts with the family to understand the improvement in her health. Earlier, she could not stand or hold anything, but now she is partially able to walk inside her home. She can attend school in Alwarkurichi regularly, approximately 10 km from her house, and is now in the 7th standard. School colleagues, teachers, and others now understand the conviction Sripriya has and support her fully in the school.

Mr. Murugan, the auto driver who assists Sripriya in commuting from her house to school and other places like the hospital and our office, said it is a miracle that Sripriya can do what she is doing today. He added that he has seen Sripriya for the last four years, and the change brought by the physiotherapy treatment is God’s gift, and the company supporting her is divine.

Last week, for a second opinion, the Vama Team organized a check-up at Selvan Swaminathan Clinic, Avvai Ashram, Sivasailam. Dr. Shyam Sundar, a physiotherapist, stated that significant support is being rendered to Sripriya as she requires this treatment long-term, and there is visible improvement in her activities. Without this full support, she could become bedridden and burdensome for her family.

Soundarya’s Story

Another girl, Soundarya, aged 15 years, affected by muscular dystrophy, needs diaper support as she finds it difficult to sense her motion. Soundarya stays in a home for the specially-abled at Suthamalli Vilakku, Tiruneveli. Regular diaper support enabled her to stay in the home. Her parents, who are daily wage workers, are happy and able to work for their other two children. Weekly on Saturdays, Soundarya’s entire family visits the home and spends time with her.

Vama Trust expresses its gratitude to all the donors for the great support extended during the last two years to serve people like Sripriya and Soundarya.
