SATURDAY MILAN (சனிக்கிழமை சங்கமம்) - 174
We are delighted to share the successful completion of the 174th week of Sangamam, held on 2nd May at our Sivasailam Centre.
The highlight of the event was “Preserve the Talent”, where our elders enthusiastically showcased their diverse skills, creativity, and rich life experiences. With great energy and joy, they engaged in a variety of activities—preparing traditional homemade delicacies such as pickles, vadagam, and narthanga urugai; demonstrating age-old cooking methods using wood stoves; creating beautiful drawings; and decorating the huts with a touch of heritage aesthetics. Some elders also participated in Kaatrin Mozhi, connecting and conversing virtually with fellow elders, reflecting the beautiful blend of tradition and technology.
Beyond these activities, what truly stood out was the depth of wisdom and cultural richness our elders brought forward. Many shared forgotten recipes, sustainable living practices, storytelling traditions, devotional songs, and simple yet meaningful crafts rooted in our heritage. Their participation was not just an expression of talent, but a powerful reminder of the invaluable knowledge they carry—knowledge that deserves to be preserved, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
Our core values—Paramaindri Vazhvu, Namma Ooru Namma Kadamai, and Magizhvithu Magizh—were meaningfully reinforced during the gathering. Elders reflected on their experiences over the past two months, sharing how they had embraced these principles in their daily lives. Their heartfelt expressions of purpose, belonging, and joy were both inspiring and deeply moving.
As planned earlier, the team from TVS Lakshmi Hospital, led by Dr. Visruth, had kindly invited our elders to Madurai to participate in the Nerisal Indri Darisanam during the Sri Kalazhagar Thiruvizha. However, considering the prevailing heatwave conditions, our elders preferred to plan this visit after the Agni Natchatram period, in June. This has been communicated to Dr. Visruth, who has graciously agreed to host them then.
We also introduced the concept of MERIT POINTS, recognizing and encouraging active participation. Elders will earn points based on their contributions, which they can redeem for Vama-organized tours, short stays at Vama facilities, or even for addressing personal financial needs—making participation both meaningful and rewarding.
The preparation of traditional dishes like kangee and narthanga urugai using firewood stoves added a nostalgic and engaging dimension to the day, bringing back cherished memories and reinforcing community bonding.
Overall, the event was vibrant, engaging, and deeply fulfilling—a true celebration of elderhood, dignity, and lifelong learning.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.
