SATURDAY MILAN (சனிக்கிழமை சங்கமம்) - 194

We are happy to share the report of the 194th Week of Sangamam, held on 1st October at Sailam, marking the International Day of Older Persons. The programme was organised with three important components: an International Day of Older Persons celebration, a Mind Wellness and Counselling Programme, and a Medical Camp for elders.

As part of the celebration, we invited Ms. Mathivadhana, District Social Welfare Officer, as the special guest to interact with and address the elders. We also invited students from the University Psychology Department to conduct interactive activities, provide basic counselling and promote mental wellness among the elders. In addition, a medical camp was organised with the support of the Indian Red Cross Society, in coordination with the Welfare Department of Tenkasi.

The programme began with a prayer song by the elders. The Psychology Department students actively joined the elders and initiated a meaningful interaction. They encouraged the elders to share their childhood and early-life achievements, memorable experiences, personal wishes, and aspirations that had remained unfulfilled for a long time. The elders participated enthusiastically and openly shared their thoughts and experiences.

The students then conducted various paper-based games, cup games, and activity-based games, creating a joyful and engaging atmosphere. They also spoke about the importance of gratitude, appreciation, saying “sorry,” and expressing “thank you” in our daily lives. The discussion highlighted how these simple values can help us maintain healthy relationships with family members, neighbours, friends, and the wider community without hesitation or negative feelings.

At around 11.00 a.m., Ms. Mathivadhana, District Social Welfare Officer, joined the programme and extended her warm wishes to all the elders on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons. She explained various Government schemes and support services available for senior citizens. She also shared information regarding schemes and support available for women and girl children, particularly in relation to their safety, welfare, and education. The elders actively participated in the discussion and raised several questions, to which she provided useful explanations and guidance.

Following this, the Psychology students conducted more fun games and activity-based sessions for the elders. The activities created a lively and positive environment, and the elders participated with great enthusiasm. During the interaction, many elders also shared their sweet memories and experiences of their four-year association with VAMA and Sangamam. Their reflections showed the emotional value and sense of belonging that the Sangamam programme has created among the elders over the years.

The programme continued with a medical camp organised with the support of the Indian Red Cross Society and the Welfare Department of Tenkasi. The elders received medical support and guidance as part of the camp.

A nutritious lunch was also arranged for all the participants. The Psychology students enthusiastically served lunch to the elders, creating a warm atmosphere of care, respect, and togetherness. The elders greatly appreciated the students’ involvement and their joyful service.

The 194th Week Sangamam concluded on a happy and positive note. The elders returned to their respective places with joyful memories, and the Psychology students expressed their willingness to continue their volunteer service and engagement with elders in the future.

The programme successfully brought together elders, students, government officials, and community organisations, demonstrating the importance of collaboration in promoting the physical, emotional, and social well-being of senior citizens.

VAMA sincerely thanks the District Social Welfare Department, Indian Red Cross Society, Tenkasi, University Psychology Department students, volunteers, and all the elders for making the 194th Week Sangamam a meaningful and memorable celebration.
